Mary Zeman writes "After our Grandpa died, Grandma took her brood and went home to her parents where she made life miserable for everyone, because she expected so much from them and everyone felt that she had had her dowry and the sisters, were at least, some of them, not yet married and still needed to be launched with the good clothes, and the dowries, and she was a very jealous person, so I suppose when Sam Lind came along she was glad. She did apparently have some property, which Sam wanted. The children never got anything that their Father had, and in fact Sam was never a successful farmer, they all wound up through the years helping out financially." " George's Mother was always glum, never looked happy, never saw her in anything but black." "Grandma Lind had a very bad fire when she was quite old, which probably wiped out all kinds of pictures and letters." She describes Sam Lind as "a tough autocratic old-worlder when I first remember him-Swede, and made life miserable for the children. Had the old country view that they should all get out to work, and bring their money, all of it, home to him. For the sake of their Mother, they went along with it pretty well, but I think they all resented, maybe even hated him. I was always a little afraid of him myself, but never saw much of him." However, it was said by Gladys Riedel Wyatt that Sam Lind cosigned-signed a loan for each one of the children to have a farm. He gave them each six milk cows, a team of horses, and farming equipment to set them up on their own. George Riedel sold all of his for a car that didn't even work well. There was something that Katrina Sherer Riedel said before meals "Komm. Herr Jesu, sei unser gast and segne, was du uns bescheret hast." Translated "Come Lord Jesus, and be our guest, and bless that which thou hast given us."
